On the importance of the selection and construction of the over-speed governor

On the importance of the selection and construction of the over-speed governor

1. A governor is installed on the circus of governor rope whose journey contains the length of the entire lift shaft. The governor rope is equipped with a tension sheave, which is located way down at the bottom of the lift shaft while the governor itself is usually placed on top of the shaft.

2. The over-speed governor,be it one-way or two-way, works as one of the key safety components. It is used to monitor the velocity of the cabin. If the downward velocity exceeds 110% of the pre-set figure of rated velocity, the governor immediately turns off the electrical switch, the main frame therefore is forced to an outage and comes to a brake. If the downward velocity exceeds 115% of rated velocity, the governor will force a mechanical brake, halting the cabin on the guide rail via safety gear.

3. The working speed of the governor which controls the safety gear of the cabin should be over 115% of rated speed of the lift; at the same time, it should less than the figures below.

a) 0.8 m/s for instantaneous safety gear aside from roller type which cannot fall off.

b) 1.0 m/s for instantaneous safety gear which cannot  roller type which cannot fall off.

c) 1.5 m/s for progressive safety gear with rated speed less than or equal to 1.0 m/s.

d) 1.25V+0.25/V (m/s)for progressive safety gear with rated speed greater than 1.0 m/s.

4. a) If the rated speed of your lift is greater than 1 m/s, you should better choose working speed approaching the maximum limit as 3 shows.

b) If the rated load of the lift is huge whilst the rated speed is low, a specified governor should be made, the working speed better approaching the minimum limit.

c) After the working speed is rated, the regulating unit should be sealed with reliable marks.

d) When the governor works, the tension of the rope should be greater or equal to twofold of the pulling force generated while safety gear works, its minimum, 300N. For governors which generate tension only via force of friction, its channel should be through an extra hardening process or should qualify the requirements of GB7588-2003 M2.2.1.

The electrical working speed of a governor is about 95% of its mechanical working speed.
